Expressing a unique style that is loosely influenced by Indian Mughal Miniature paintings, and by the Indian philosophy of yoga and meditation, these
drawings strike a balance between the chaos and tranquility of my life. They are statements of the life I live where economic, political, and cultural aggression
is carried on amid the beauty, symmetry, and grace of the natural world. These drawings also express difficult emotions about the war on Iraq and my
in/ability to find spiritual direction within this. The central component of each drawing is a depiction of a poised figure and/or an open bowl. For me, these
images embody stillness in the hope that the body and spirit can be nourished despite the injustices of our lives. It is the “Begging Bowls” of the title that
makes reference to exactly this search for meaning. The reference to yoga postures reflects my personal intellectual and spiritual struggle to find peace of
mind in the midst of global inequity, poverty, war, and the media spectacle of modern cities. Around this central component are a flurry of images that dazzle
the eye and provide an analysis of the oppressions and injustices faced by those caught within the grip of power: displaced people, immigrants, refugees,
political prisoners, children, minorities. Interspersed between these depictions are moments of love, learning and humanity that fill my spirit and ultimately
help me transform my self.
